About This Yatra

Pandharpur, located on the banks of the Chandrabhaga (Bhima) River in Maharashtra, is one of the most important pilgrimage centers in India. The parabrahma or the God of Pandharpur is worshipped and lovingly called by his devotees with many names — Pandharinath, Pandurang, Vitthal, Vithoba, Vithumauli, and Hari. Lord Vitthala is God Vishnu, standing on a brick and resting his arms on his waist, waiting patiently for His devotee Pundalik.

The sacred Chandrabhaga River flows alongside Pandharpur and is considered highly holy. It is believed that Lord Krishna came to this place to meet his disciple Pundalik, who was busy serving his parents. Pundalik offered a brick (vit) to Lord Krishna and asked him to wait standing on it till he finished his service. Lord Krishna agreed and waited patiently on the brick, which became his idol as Vitthal.

The town is the epicenter of the Wari tradition, where millions of pilgrims (Warkaris) from across Maharashtra walk to Pandharpur carrying the paduka (footprints) of saints like Dnyaneshwar, Tukaram, Namdev, Eknath, and others. The river hosts grand festivals such as Ashadhi Ekadashi and Kartiki Ekadashi.

Places to Visit

Sri Vitthal Rukmini Temple

The main temple dedicated to Lord Vitthala and Goddess Rukmini. The idol of Vitthala standing on a brick with hands on his waist is the central focus of devotion. Mother Shri Rukmini's temple is in the north, featuring a magnificent west-facing idol decorated with ornaments, a big kumkum tilak on her forehead, and a silver bed with velvet clothes.

Chandrabhaga River

The sacred Bhima River flows near Pandharpur, known locally as Chandrabhaga. Taking a holy dip here before temple darshan is an essential part of the pilgrimage. The river is associated with many saints of the Bhakti movement and hosts festivals like Ashadhi Ekadashi and Kartiki Ekadashi, attracting lakhs of pilgrims.

Pundalik Mandir

The temple dedicated to Bhakt Pundalik, the great devotee who served his ailing parents with such dedication that Lord Krishna himself came to bless him. Pundalik's devotion is the very reason Lord Vitthala stands waiting on a brick in Pandharpur.

Kolhapur Mahalakshmi Temple

One of the Shakti Peethas, the Mahalakshmi Temple at Kolhapur is a sacred destination en route to Pandharpur. The goddess is worshipped here as Ambabai, and the temple is a major spiritual attraction in Maharashtra.

ISKCON Pandharpur & Hampi Virupaksha

The ISKCON temple in Pandharpur offers a serene spiritual atmosphere. The yatra also extends to Hampi Virupaksha Temple, Yantradharaka Hanuman, Anegundi, Nava Brundavana, and Seebi Narasimha — enriching the pilgrimage with diverse spiritual heritage.
