How Srila Bhaktisiddhanta Sarasvati Thakura awarded the dress of a paramahamsa to thirteen older disciples, establishing the standards of Gaudiya Matha babajis.
Induction by the Paramahamsa Guru
Throughout his preaching career, Śrīla Bhaktisiddhānta Sarasvatī Ṭhākura awarded paramahaṁsa-veśa (the dress of a paramahaṁsa) to thirteen disciples. Except for being white, their attire was the same as that of sannyasis.
Addressed as Bābājī Mahārāja, they were older men whose family commitments were fulfilled. Traditionally, a sannyasi could not invest others as bābājī, because a bābājī is a paramahaṁsa — beyond varṇan and āśrama and above sannyāsa. But since Śrīla Sarasvatī Ṭhākura was an eternally liberated paramahaṁsa himself, he was fully qualified to induct them.

Plain Living and Bhajan Standards
Unlike other lines, Śrīla Sarasvatī's bābājīs retained their sacred threads. They were not instructed in līlā-smaraṇa or permitted to study intimate līlās prematurely. They lived plainly and austerely, performing bhajana of constant śravaṇa-kīrtana.
Some stayed behind to help in arcana, while others went out for bhikṣā and nagara-saṅkīrtana. Some were so absorbed in bhajana that they were unaware of the world around them, exemplifying the paramahaṁsa platform.
